As the Oscar Nominees walk the red carpet, they are asked “Who are you wearing?” I am asking “Who are you supporting?” … which oscar nominee is the most charitable?
The last category for the Goodies is Best Cause-anista. A Cause-anista, is the equivalent of a fashionista but instead of fashion, it’s charity. The nominees for Best Cause-anista are: George Clooney for his charity work for Darfur, Brad Pitt for his charity work for sustainable housing, Meryl Streep for her charity work supportin women, Glenn Close for her charity work supporting mental illness, and Steven Spielberg for his charity work supporting children and social justice.
George Clooney- Darfur
As one of the Sexiest Men alive, it’s safe to say he is also one of the most charitable. He is one of the lead founders of Not On Our Watch, whose mission is to focus global attention and resources towards ending mass atrocities around the world, specifically Darfur. Clooney not only attends charity galas and events, he has travelled to Sudan to meet victims of rape and torture, speaks out at rallies (Save Darfur) and the United Nations, makes films documenting the plight (Journey to Darfur, Sand and Sorrow,) writes letters and visits other governments (Germany, China, and Egypt) to promote this cause. In 2008 the UN announced Clooney as a Messenger of Peace. Along with John Prendergast, Clooney started the Satelite Sentinel Project ,which monitors armed activity in Sudan. In addition to these causes, Clooney also supports Bono’s ONE campaign (ending famine in Somalia) and is on the Board of Trustees for the United Way. Just last week (Feb. 24, 2012), Clooney committed to helping the Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation raise $350 million dollars.
GOOD trivia facts: Clooney had a pet pig named Max who is credited with saving his life. Donated $25,000 to the writers during their 2007 strike.
Brad Pitt- Affordable and Sustainable Housing
Brad Pitt supports a number of charities and causes both internationally and domestically in the US. His charitable activities have intensified since 2005 – ie. Angelina Jolie. Regardless of the impetus to be more charitable, when natural disaster strikes, Pitt steps up (from the Kashmir Earthquake to Hurricane Katrina). Internationally, Pitt is one of the founders of Not On Our Watch (see mission in Clooney’s bio) and co-founded the Jolie-Pitt Foundation to aid humanitarian causes around the world (over $6 million spent supporting Global Action for Children, Doctors without Borders, UN refugee agency and the Daniel Pearl Foundation). He also has adopted Maddox, Zahara, and Pax with Angelina Jolie from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam. Domestically, green housing and architecture appear to be passions as he founded the Make it Right Foundation, organizing housing professionals in New Orleans to finance and construct sustainable and affordable houses in Ninth Ward following Katrina. Pitt recently (Feb. 20th, 2012) announced the next project building houses in Kansas City. Pitt has also said he won’t get married again until everyone in the US can.
GOOD trivia Fact- Pitt went to Kickapoo high school
Meryl Streep- Women’s Issues
As one of my favourite actresses of all time, I was pleased to see that she is also very charitable.
Her main cause of choice is supporting women as demonstrated by being the spokesperson for the National Women’s History Museum, supporting the work of Women for Women International and starring in a 2010 PSA promoting equality. She recently used her celebrity fees from the Iron Lady to support these causes. In addition to supporting women’s issues, Streep has been involved in raising money for causes including disasters such as the 2005 Tsunami, Katrina, Darfur, and Haiti. She also lends her talent to raise funds for cancer and other human rights abuses around the world.
GOOD Trivia Fact: Meryl Streep’s rendition of Mamma Mia was #8 on the Portuguese music charts.
Glenn Close- Mental Illness
Glenn Close supports a number of charitable causes from cancer to mental illness. She is an ambassador to EIF, Women’s Cancer Research Fund and has helped design a pair of Stuart Weitzman shoes for charity benefiting ovarian cancer. Close co-created Bring Change 2 Mind in order to reduce the stigma attached to mental illness (family history).
GOOD trivia Fact: Glenn Close has had her DNA sequenced.
Steven Spielberg- Children and Social Justice
Spielberg is one of the most influential directors of all time. Spielberg’s impact to the world extends beyond film, as he is one of the most charitable. In 1991 he co-founded Starbright Foundation now known as Starlight Children’s Foundation whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses by providing entertainment, education and family activities to help cope with pain, fear and isolation. A few years later, Spielberg created the Righteous Persons Foundation to engage Jewish youth, to support the arts, and to promote tolerance and social justice. Following Hurricane Katrina, Speilberg stepped up and donated $750K to the American Red Cross. He also stands up for his principles resigning as a member of the national advisory board of the Boy Scouts of America in 2001 because of his disapproval of the organization’s anti-gay stance and and just prior to the Beijing Olympics pulled out of his role as advisor in response to the Chinese government’s inaction over Darfur saying “I find that my conscience will not allow me to continue business as usual.” To protest proposition 8, he donated $100,000 to the campaign fund.
